A Policy Seminar Hosted by the Cal Cities African American Caucus

[Sacramento, CA] - The Cal Cities African American Caucus announces today that the date for the upcoming social equity program, From Prohibition to Progress, Navigating Cannabis, Equity, and Social Justice seminar has been changed.  Originally scheduled for July 24, 2024, the event will now take place on Monday, September 9, 2024.  

“We apologize for any inconvenience this change may cause and appreciate the understanding and support of our attendees, partners, and sponsors,” said Marla A. Matime, Executive Director of the Cal Cities African American Caucus.  “This decision was made to ensure that we can deliver the best possible experience for everyone involved.”

The African American Caucus' mission is to represent the interests of African American city officials and the greater African American community within the Cal Cities, the National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials, and related state and national organizations. This mission will be achieved by the identification of issues of concern to the African American community and the vocalization of those issues through sponsorship of educational seminars, viable legislative advocacy and heightened participation and involvement in the Cal Cities initiatives.

The Cal Cities African American Caucus is pleased to be hosting a policy seminar on

cannabis July 24, and encourages all interested city officials to attend. Hosted in the

beautiful California Endowment event center, the all day seminar will be focused on the

intersection of cannabis and social equity and justice. Participants will delve into the

complexities of the cannabis industry and its profound implications for marginalized

communities. Through interactive panel discussions, and expert insights, attendees will

gain a comprehensive understanding of the challenges and opportunities surrounding legal

cannabis and its impact on social justice and economic and community development.

● Eugene Hillsman, Deputy Director of Equity and Inclusion, Department of Cannabis

● Yvette McDowell, Cannabis Law Consultant

Our seminar will explore various aspects of social equity in the cannabis space, including:

the historical injustices and systemic inequalities on communities of color; the evolving

regulatory framework governing cannabis legalization; and social equity initiatives at local,

state, and federal levels. Additional panels will cover inclusive participation in the cannabis

industry, strategies for fostering community involvement, and the social impact of cannabis

legalization.

The seminar is intended to be a space for meaningful dialogue between elected officials,

local government employees, regulators, industry professionals, and social justice

advocates with the shared goal of a more equitable and inclusive future for licensed

cannabis.
